The online platform, the first dedicated exclusively to World Heritage and sustainable travel tourism, was designed and developed by UNESCO in collaboration with the globally renowned National Geographic, with support from the European Union. One of the programme’s key aims was to propose a different way for people to travel — encouraging longer stays at destinations, deeper engagement with local cultural heritage and the natural environment, and a richer understanding and appreciation of World Heritage values.
Archaeologist Mr. Konstantinos Antonopoulos, as a member of the project team of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ilia that collaborated with UNESCO and National Geographic for more than 18 months, contributed to creating high-quality, educational content (texts, images, videos, etc.) on Ancient Olympia and the wider region, which has been available on the platform since September 2018.
